Nadia Chan is no stranger to the fast-paced industry of beauty. She is a co-founder of Maiko, the Singapore distributor of CANVAS Beauty. Together with her sister, they are leading the way in demystifying organic skincare and are hoping to inspire others to achieve well-being inside and out. CANVAS Beauty aims to preserve our skin’s natural beauty by applying aromatherapy intelligence using organic ingredients and no harmful chemicals.

Thank you, Nadia, for speaking to us about nourishment from within and why it means so much to you.
What inspired you to be an entrepreneur and venture into skin care?
From a young age, I have always been very ambitious and entrepreneurial. For example, when I was in secondary school, I offered dog walking services to my neighbours. I also resold furniture that my parents no longer wanted and were prepared to throw away. I honestly don’t think everyone aspires to be an entrepreneur but when you do have that ‘flame’ in you, I think you’ll jump at any opportunity you can to be one.
When I first tried CANVAS products as a customer, I felt an immediate connection because the blend of organic plant species and aromatherapy oils in the products not only improved my skin’s health but the essential oils were extremely soothing to the soul and they uplifted my spirit. This resonated with my personal philosophies and needless to say, when my sister Sophia and I were given the opportunity to distribute CANVAS, we were very excited and there was no turning back.
How do you prioritise health and a sense of well-being;?
It is all about balance – finding that balance between work and my personal life, and even time for myself. I am proud to say I have achieved this balance by finding passion and enjoyment in whatever I do. Once my heart is in, half the battle is won. This, I believe, helps me to live positively every day and feel that sense of happiness and contentment. Secondly, it is finding that sense of purpose which gives me motivation. Simply put, having a passion for whatever I do and knowing what my goals are, helps me to lead a purposeful life. I also ensure that I make time for myself at least twice a week, no matter how busy I am. ‘Me-time’ can be as easy as exercising regularly, which I try to do after work, and having a good night’s sleep. I always try to maintain well-being either through the food I consume, the products I use on my face and body or even the music I listen to.
I’ve seen many entrepreneurs take a passion and turn it into a business. Unfortunately, a lot of times, doing this takes the passion out of what they are doing. How do you run your business beyond passion (while remaining passionate about the industry)?
Thankfully, I have the experience of running a PR agency. I am the general manager of a boutique agency in Singapore. In my day-to-day job, I sometimes take on work that I have minimal interest in. In this instance, I have more macro-set goals and I set out specific actions that will help me get there. The same applies to CANVAS. We make business decisions based on factual information. For example, when we’re deciding what products to bring in, we don’t order specific products just because we enjoy using them, we order products that we know are our customers favourite and will sell.
What advice would you give to any multi-hyphenate woman about how to look after themselves and their skin?
With the fast-paced life we lead today, it is easy to overlook making time for ourselves and looking after our overall wellbeing. It is vital for any one of us to allocate some ‘me-time’ to relax even if it means working out – planning is definitely key. Of course, with mental well-being being central to every aspect of our lives, being happy is key too! Do what makes you happy. Make the effort to learn more about who you really are and spend time giving yourself the extra attention you deserve. When this happens, your skin, your hair and your smile will glow!
Another piece of advice, specifically for skin, is to be diligent about using sunscreen every single day (especially in Singapore). At some point in our lives, the effects of sun exposure will be visible – fine lines, skin discolouration and dark spots. Thus, using sunscreen protects our skin from damaging UVA and UVB rays. Going to bed every single night with squeaky clean skin is extremely important. Any leftover makeup or sunscreen residue can clog pores and cause skin irritation or even acne breakouts. Even if some of us don’t apply sunscreen or makeup, our skin is constantly exposed to dirt and pollution in the course of a day, resulting in the build-up of oil and dirt on our outer skin layer.
Which product is your go to?
CANVAS Brightening Clay Mask! Sometimes when it is ‘that time of the month’ or when I don’t get enough sleep or hydration, I suffer from acne. The brightening clay mask helps to diffuse the inflammation on my skin. It also smells lovely which is perfect for relaxation after a hard day at work.
