I admit it – I’m a crazy dog lady! This ‘craziness’ has always been there – since I was a little girl – but it went up a few notches when Hubby and I adopted a dog we re-named Pinot Grigio. When we decided we were ready to bring a four-legged member into our family, we also agreed to adopt because there were so many great dogs out there that deserved a second chance. By adopting, we felt that we could change a dog’s life, while at the same time making a stand against puppy mills in our own small way.
What we found along the way was that dogs looking for a new home come in every shape, size, age, coat colour and breed (mixed and pure breed). When you adopt, you are not only giving a dog a new home but you’re also saving another dog’s life! You do this by freeing up space at the shelter for a new intake. Then with a little bit of patience and a whole lot of love, your rescue dog will become a wonderful family member.
If you’re ready to add a furry friend to your home, hopefully you will also consider adoption as an option. To help you in your search, I’ve compiled a list of rescue organisations and resources here in Singapore where you could find that special pup. Click on the title for links to each of their websites. There are quite a few in Singapore so read up on each of them and then pick a few to visit. Some of the shelters will list the dogs they have for adoption and also ways that you can help out (another post on that later).

Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD)
Looking for that one-of-a-kind ‘Singapore Special’, aka local mixed breed dog, to bring home? ASD has stray and abandoned dogs of all ages and sizes just waiting for their very own family.
Animal Lovers League (ALL)
The people at ALL are lovers of both dogs and cats and provide for these abandoned animals until they are rehomed. With over 700 animals up for adoption, you’re sure to find your perfect match.
A Stray’s Life
A Stray’s Life works with individual rescuers and stray feeders to help rehome dogs under their charge.
Exclusively Mongrels
Set up by non-pedigree dog owners, Exclusively Mongrels raises awareness about the uniqueness of mongrels, mutts, cross-breeds, or ‘Singapore Specials’.
Gentle Paws
The guys at Gentle Paws organise monthly beach outings to give all their rescues a ‘break’ from shelter life. Do you have room in your home to give one of them that permanent break?
Ex-Police Dogs
These retired K-9 unit police dogs have done their duty to keep Singapore safe. Now, you can help keep them safe in their golden years by giving them a home.
Hope Dog Rescue
Hope Dog Rescue helps animals that are abused, neglected or abandoned, and they believe that street dogs make the best pets.
Mdm Wong’s Shelter
Set up by a retired lady who sold her home to run a safe haven for abused and abandoned animals, Mdm Wong’s Shelter houses about 50 dogs and 200 cats – all up for adoption.
Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD)
SOSD rescues stray dogs and puppies. These dogs would love to know what it’s like to live in the comfort of a real home.
Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter (OSCAS)
More than 100 stray dogs rescued from all over Singapore call OSCAS their home while they wait for the right families to come along.
SPCA
We’ve all heard of SPCA but did you know that they also have a rehoming noticeboard where the public can post up personal adoption notices? These pets usually come toilet trained and understand basic commands.
Three Legs Good (Ceased Operations)
If you’re that special person looking for a special needs dog, then take a look at Three Legs Good. They are dedicated to giving injured and disabled dogs a second chance at life.
Voices for Animals (VFA)
Ready to give a puppy mill survivor love and a brighter future? VFA focuses on rescuing and rehoming ex-breeding dogs.
